Southern Cape Symphony Orchestra Live at the Botanical Gardens
Date: Sunday 17th February 2013
Time: 17h00
Adults R 60 / Pensioners and Students R 50 / Kids under 15 R 30
The South Cape Symphony Orchestra will be performing an afternoon of well-known classical music, rousing marches, African melodies, as well as some Gilbert and Sullivan in the lovely setting of the Garden Route Botanical Garden.
The South Cape Symphony Orchestra has about 30 members drawn from as far afield as Mossel Bay and Knysna as well as George itself. Conductor Niall Jack is highly experienced in orchestral conducting. Currently he is Head of Music at York High School.
Not only does the Orchestra bring great enjoyment to the people of George and the surrounding areas, but the participation therein forms an essential part of the musical training of many young (as well as not-so-young) musicians.
Several young people have already passed through the orchestra and are now pursuing further musical studies at various universities.
Successful performances in the past have included "The Last Night at the Proms" held in George last year. Coming up in March is "Songs of Praise" with Richard Cock, when the Orchestra will provide all the instrumental backing.
ADDED BONUS: FREE ENTRANCE INTO A UNIQUE, OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION ~ BY Antoine TEMPE
If it rains – the concert will take place in the Voortrekker Hall.

Saturday 26th January 2013 LIVE in the Botanical Gardens
Iconic South African Acoustic Guitar Genius STEVE NEWMAN,
along with Greg Georgiades and Ashish Joshi
Steve is known throughout SA and way beyond its borders for his incredible body of award-winning work dedicated to the fine art of acoustic guitar playing. This is not a genre that brings massive wealth and certainly has never fit in to the rank commercialisation of our music industry, yet it is a fact that if you want to look for true, gifted, musical genius one must look beyond the obvious to where the real cutting edge actually is.
Steve Newman is exactly where that cutting edge is. Non-conformist, uninterested in accolades of any sort, propelled purely by his love of music and his pleasure at sharing what he has with others. In any other world the man would be a multi-millionaire purely for his skills.
He is though, much more than just a great guitarist; he is a compassionate and passionate humanist, a loyal friend, husband and a great father.
His musical works, recordings, collaborations and performances span forty years. He created South Africa’s one and only super-group, Tananas back in the early 80’s and this trio of gifted musicians went on to play all over the world. There was nothing quite like them and nothing since. His long association with Tony Cox touched the hearts and ears of several generations and they are still going strong today performing to sold-out shows after 3 decades of performance together.
Going back to early days, Steve formed many groups around himself such as the Squirrel Skinners and the Biscuit Raiders both with a strong bluegrass flavour but with cross-over jazz and classical idioms, all delivered with sparkling arrangements and a great sense of mischief and fun. Before that he had various groups and buddies he played with at school. The afternoon promises to deliver up the most unexpected musical concoctions and by all intents and purposes lift your heart and put a smile on your dial...
Date: Saturday, 26th January 2013
Time: 18h00
