Many organic materials serve as both fertilizers and soil conditioners as they feed both soils and plants.
This is one of the most important differences between a chemical approach and an organic approach toward soil care and fertilizing. Soluble chemical fertilizers contain mineral salts that plant roots can absorb quickly. However, these salts do not provide a food source for soil microorganisms and earthworms, and will even repel earthworms because they acidify the soil.

Over time, soils treated only with synthetic chemical fertilizers lose organic matter and the all-important living organisms that help to build a quality soil. As soil structure declines and water-holding capacity diminishes, more and more of the chemical fertilizer applied will leach through the soil. In turn, it will take ever-increasing amounts of chemicals to stimulate plant growth. Organic fertilizers contain additional elements that can help make your soil more healthy. Because they release their nutrients slowly, it is difficult to over-fertilize with them.

In the days when most families kept a milk cow or small chicken flock, manure was a standard garden fertilizer. But with the advent of chemical fertilizers, many gardeners stopped using manure. Organic gardeners have rediscovered the benefits of manure as a soil conditioner and compost ingredient.

It is extremely important to feed your lawn and soil around flower beds regularly to ensure a healthy environment for maximum growth during spring and summer. As our soil in Knysna is either clay or sand, we need to rehabilitate it.

Our compost (Rehab) and Lawn Food do exactly that. During winter we also need micro organism activity in our soil. Start preparing your soil as soon as possible. Mulching assists in retaining moisture and a healthy looking garden.

GRO BACK is available at Garden Route organic, with GRO BACK essential nutrients are released slowly into the soil, stimulating microbiological activity making further nutrients available to the plant and also helps the development of healthy well structured soils. It promotes microbial and earthworm activity which bind soil particles together to improve soil structure. Better soil structure allows roots to grow unrestricted in a nutrient rich environment. GRO BACK is manufactured from composted free range chicken manure, free from hormones and steroids, one of nature's oldest and most natural fertilizers. This product is composted and steam treated to ensure it is pathogen and weed free.

GRO BACK is packaged in white polypro bags, containing 40dm or approx 20kg. Price is R80 per bag but discount can be negotiated on orders of 10 or more bags.

Most chemical/synthetic nutrients/fertilizers have to be in salt form to be soluble and available for plant absorption.

Salt tends to attract water and when water is not available, it will extract water from the plant.

This is the reason plants burn after synthetic fertilizer application.

Organic fertilizers generally come with a significantly lower percentage of salt.

Compost and animal manures increase earthworm and microorganism activity in the soil – both of which improve soil organic matter content and structure.

Better soil structure also means better infiltration and water-holding capacity. Under such soil conditions, less water is lost through run-off and percolation.

Considering that growing plants are constantly transpiring – losing water through the leaves, synthetic fertilizer application indirectly demands excessive water.

Plants fed with organic fertilizer grow at a regulated rate and thrive on less water.

One plant that seems to come through heatwaves without too much damage is plumbago.

Plumbago can be left to grow as a sprawling shrub, allowed to climb, or it can be brought into line with a regular haircut. It spreads by suckers so it is a great choice for an informal flowering hedge 1.5m-2m high. Although plants have survived the heat and drought, they do even better with the occasional deep water.

The use of mulches in gardening should be standard practice. Researchers from many agricultural experiment stations, private industry, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have shown striking benefits from mulch applications. Some of these benefits are listed below.

Mulches conserve moisture by reducing the amount of soil water lost through evaporation.

Mulches help maintain a uniform soil temperature. They act as insulators, keeping the soil warmer during cool weather and cooler during the warm months of the year.

Mulches minimize soil erosion and compaction from heavy rains and aid in water penetration.

Mulches help with weed problems. If it is applied correctly, weed seeds in the soil won't germinate. Or if the mulch layer is deep, seedlings that do germinate can't push up through it.

Mulches often give a neater and more finished appearance to a flower bed, evergreen or shrub plantings, or the vegetable garden.

Organic mulches serve as food for many microorganisms in the soil. As previously mentioned, these organisms are necessary for maintaining and promoting soil granulation. A mulch also helps keep the soil temperature constant so that the activity of the microorganisms can continue at an even rate.

Mulch available at GRO in in 40dm bags at R20 each.

The ideal gift. We will be closing on 15th December and will open again on 4th January. Strawberry Baskets will be on sale @ R70 each till we close. See our facebook page for more. www.facebook.com/gardenrouteorganic/

Strawberry Baskets
During the first 6-weeks, any blossoms need to be pinched or cut off. This ensures that the strawberry plants have enough time to get accustomed to their new environment before using up all their energy to grow the strawberries.

The plants should be watered daily until the plants start to produce, sometime after the 6-week period. At that point, water only when the top inch or so of the soil is dry.

When watering, do not wet the fruits, as they will develop botrytis, so use a watering can, and gently water near the crowns. Do not use a hosepipe, as it will spray the fruits, and disease will follow.
Plants should be mulched in the winter. After the final harvest, tuck any spare runners into the soil. Remove any unwanted runners. Cut back the remaining foliage to about 10cm above the crown to allow the new leaves to come through.

Try to place in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water often. This basket should be producing strawberries for at least 3 years.
