How Are We and What Do We Do
Garden Route Birds of Prey was established by Bertus and Lizette Beukes in 2018 and is situated in George, Western Cape.
Most vets have the necessary facility to help stabilize and look after birds of prey for a few days, but soon after, they are released, some too early in their recovery. It was decided to start a place where we as a rehab centre could help our community and birds of prey in the area, and also house those that are unable to be released by using them for educational purposes. Our aim was and still is to educate and help our community by raising awareness around BoP and the importance around conserving them by raising awareness surrounding Human-Wildlife conflict that occurs throughout the world. In order for us to do so, we need the support from the public as we cannot do it without their help.
We try to give every patient the best chance at survival, by ensuring that they receive the best care possible. Each patient that arrives is evaluated to determine what injuries it may have; is then treated accordingly and released back into the wild as soon as possible. Each case is different, and some patients take longer than others to heal and may require help for extended periods of time before we can release them back into the wild. At GRBoP (Garden Route Birds of Prey), our mission is to try to get our younger generation involved, thereby making use of volunteers and teaching them about the different Birds of Prey and helping to care for them. Over the last few years, we have had an innovative group of volunteers who have learnt an array of skills and knowledge to take with them in the future allowing them to have a positive impact on their community.
In October this year, the Birds of Prey Rehabilitation centre and conservation organisation approached us about relocating their centre to the Botanical Garden. The Trust along with the Municipality did their due diligence and research about this NPO and came to the agreement to house the rehabilitation centre at the Botanical Garden as the work that they do is aligned with our aims and objectives.
The aims and objectives of the Garden Route Botanical Garden are to:
•Conserve, rehabilitation and protection of the natural environment, including flora, fauna and the biosphere for the benefit of the South African Community at large.
•Through promotion of, education and training programmes relating to environmental awareness, conservation, greening, cleanup and sustainable development projects.
The Birds of Prey is a Non-Profit Organisation that is focused on the rehabilitation of birds of prey. They do environmental education on birds of prey and the various issues the birds face as well as releasing birds that have been successfully rehabilitated. The centre does not actively breed birds, they do however have non releasable birds that sometimes breed successfully, in which case the release the babies at various locations across the Cape. Birds that cannot be released back into the wild due to injury and hand rearing are used to educate the community.
We look forward to working with this organisation in strengthening our environmental education programmes to include at risk fauna, such as Birds of Prey. We feel that as the Garden Route Botanical Garden is aimed at protecting our natural ecosystems, encouraging the conservation of these birds is part of our responsibility as a conservation organisation.
The Birds of Prey rehabilitation centre is hoping to open soon, keep an eye on their Facebook page as well as ours for more information on the official opening.
