The N2 has been closed for traffic just outside Knysna, near the Uniondale/Nekkies turnoff.

Sergeant Chris Spies, spokesperson for the Knysna police, confirmed that a group of people started burning tyres on the N2 at about 12:30 today.

Motorists are advised to stay clear of the scene as there are people stoning cars and burning tyres near Lamco.

The situation has escalated and the road will probably remain closed for the day.

Spies said the police are on the scene.

"The reason for the protest is not known at this stage, but both lanes incoming and outgoing are closed for traffic at this stage."
